The Week In Review

The week was pretty boring – it was another long week at the office.  Nothing fun, although I made some substantial progress on a large project I had.  It’s annual review time, so I also had to review myself and my whole team.  Luckily I have a kick-butt team so it’s a pretty easy endeavor.

Saturday was heartbreak.  After a nice stint at Dunn Bros (the best coffee) and some final tallying of the Super Bowl prop picks, it was time for the Kansas-Missouri basketball game at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.  I wasn’t there – I was watching it on ESPN – but it didn’t matter.  KU was up by 8 with just a few minutes to go and suddenly the next thing you know Marcus Denmon fires off nine straight, putting the Jayhawks down by a point.  Five fouls in the last couple of minutes and KU managed to give the game away to the Tigers.  Three weeks left to stew on that until they meet again – this time in Lawrence – for the last Border War.

Finally it was Superbowl Sunday.  Two weeks of hype and the Patriots and Giants met up for a rematch of 2007’s battle.  I didn’t have a horse in the race, so to speak – to me it was the lesser of two evils – so I was just interested in a great game and with a couple of key things happening (such as Victor Cruz not getting a catch over 29.5 yards, more than 3 field goals and the first team to score winning).  To watch the Patriots give up a safety on their first possession was just fun…but not as much fun as this guy had with it.  Ultimately my picking prowess gave me a pretty nice win over a friend of mine…which means I get some wings.  I’ll take it – especially since the last two years I’ve been the one on the buying end.  The wings will taste AWESOME.

That’s it for a boring week.  Next week promises to be more interesting.  Maybe.

The Week In Review

They may seem like botulism victims, but they’re loyal.

That was an awesome quote (Chuck to Casey).  Unfortunately, it also signaled that I was just over two episodes away from the end of the best show on television: Chuck.  After five awesome seasons and 91 episodes, Chuck finished it’s run Friday night.

I haven’t actually seen the final two episodes (“Chuck vs. Sarah” and “Chuck vs. Goodbye”); I really don’t want to.  I’d rather do what I did with JAG a few years ago – I DVD’d the final episode and waited five months before I watched Harm and Mac ride off into the sunset (don’t worry – that wasn’t really a spoiler).  It was more denial about it actually being over in that case; with Chuck I’m not actually in denial…just bummed.

The Week In Review

The weekend always seems to go by too fast, and this weekend was no exception.

It’s Sunday night, time for my weekly recap of this week’s notable (and sometimes incredibly boring) events.

Let’s start with Monday.  6:10am found me sitting in Kansas City International airport, waiting for my flight to Seattle (via Denver) on my favorite airline – Southwest.  It was a good flight – especially flying over the large snow-covered trees as we came in for a landing.

The Week In Review

I survived another week.  Looking back it was a crazy one, but it didn’t really feel that way in the middle of it.  It was really only in retrospect that I realized that it seemed like somehow the second full week of January bypassed all space and time constraints and ended up squeezing more than seven full days into it.

Monday started the first full week of 2012 at the office, and it was…interesting.  We ran into some system issues that wreaked havoc on getting stuff accomplished.  Once we figured out some of those things the world turned a little smoother.

The Week In Review

One week of 2012 is in the books.

I’m still feeling bullish about the year.  Sure, it’s only been a week (eight days, technically), but some of the best laid plans have fallen apart sooner than that before, so I’m counting every week as a plus.  2.2% of the year down, 97.8% to go.

The week was fairly uneventful – nothing really of note.  Monday was the last day of vacation for me, so it was kind of bittersweet.  For the first time ever, I wasn’t looking forward to going back to the office.  Usually I am – I’m excited about what the new year brings.  This year I’m certainly pumped about 2012 being a good year, but after the recent unexpected losses of my friend and former boss and my cousin Jerry, some well-timed advice from my dad and having an absolute blast over the last week of the year spending time with my kids, it was hard to go back to the office.

The Week In Review

I’m not sure I put a lot of pieces together this week, but I did at least take some time.  Save for an hour I dropped by the office on Tuesday and maybe three hours total the rest of the week when I checked/responded to e-mail I managed to put work aside and have some fun.

The vast majority of my week was spent at home.  Playing some games (card and miniatures), organizing bunches of my stuff (or pretending to) and playing some Facebook games (like Zombie Farm; don’t judge).  Some playing around outside, a couple of trips to the coffee shop.  Too much shopping for stuff I may or may not need.

The Week In Review

No.

It doesn’t matter what else happened, this week gets a large “NO”.  It gets an asterisk next to it in the books; is stricken from the annals of history; turned 2011 into a year with only 51 weeks in it.

Because this week needed to not have happened.

I know everything happens for a reason and God has a plan.  Or at least I want to believe that – it’s incredibly hard to do that right now.  When a friend has died suddenly and unexpectedly the rest of the world ceases to be good.
