The Week In Review

Someone lit one of these under my productivity this week.

I managed to get a bunch of stuff accomplished, which counts as a good week in my book.  Not the only way to have a good week – doing nothing also can constitute a good week – but certainly in the context of the season we’ll say getting a bunch of stuff knocked off the list qualifies as one of those rare beasts.

The week itself was fairly calm – a lot of work and a lot of late nights, but nothing out of the ordinary.  We’re preparing for some major change on January 1, so getting stuff figured out and working was the order of the week.  We’re getting there – I’m still a little tentative at how clean the transition is going to be, but I’m not freaking out.

The Week In Review

Let’s chalk this week up to recovery.  And by “recovery” I mean “recovering from vacation back to what constitutes the real world these days”.

I apparently enjoyed far too much of my week off – coming back to the office this week almost killed me.  Nothing new – unfortunately the same old, same old.

Nothing really fancy during the week.  Just enough during the evenings that I didn’t even get to check The Chive (and yes, The Chive is safe for work…moderately, anyway).

The Week In Review

It was a busy week to say the least.

This week I stopped using Firefox.  The once-awesome Mozilla web browser lost complete favor with me.  Something happened in the last three or four versions that turned it into a complete memory hog.  Goodbye Firefox, hello Chrome.

This week I learned how to program in Java.  I can write basic programs and figured out the interface, so we’ll call that “knowing how to program in Java”.  Nobody is going to hire me as a Java programmer based on my merits at this point, but I’m content with where I’m at after about five days.

The Week In Review

Any week when I can snag a couple of good quotes is a good week in my book.

Monday was hell.  Not a “my dog died” kind of hell (probably because I don’t have a dog) but just one of those “the world has it out for me” days that makes you want to go back to bed and sleep for the next 24 hours.  Don’t get me wrong – the core of the problem is a good problem to have, but there are days at the office when I’d really like for things to click all day long, so I could reduce the (currently 76) list of items in my “actionable follow-up” down to the single digits.

But I survived – can’t ask for more than that.  And truly this is a “first world problem” to have (thanks to The Chive for that reference) – I really am blessed with a good job and the best team in the company.  Are there things I’d like to change?  Sure, but on the whole it’s really hard to argue with where I’m at.

The Week In Review

What. a. week.

I’ve never been a fan of roller-coasters. I didn’t mind the Zambezi Zinger “speed coaster” at Worlds of Fun (which was retired about 15 years ago) since it was all about the speed and not so much the twists and turns (and there were no loops). But these modern day up-down-inside-out-upside-down kind of coasters are definitely not my cup of tea.

So imagine when my week resembled something like the Kingda Ka (if you don’t want to follow the link here’s the short scoop: 456 feet tall, 0-128mph in 3.5 seconds, 418 foot drop). OK, it wasn’t really that bad, but it was up-and-down to be sure.

Monday started off not like I was hoping it would. Having been out of the office four days out of last week I was concerned with what Monday would bring. But I kept up fairly well (or tried to) on the issues and the e-mails so I told myself Monday was going to be a good day.

The Week In Review

So I decided to do something new.

Now that beach volleyball out at Volleyball Beach is over, there aren’t any more beach volleyball updates.  Unless, I suppose, I move to Florida or California (no – not in the cards…at least as far as I know at this point).

So I decided to take a page from my dad and do a weekly update.  He does them in an e-mail for my sister in Australia, but he send them out to the rest of the family as well.  In my case I’m just going to do a blog instead.

No guarantees there’s anything exciting – but if you’ve read my blog you know not to expect anything exciting, anyway. *grin*
