Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone! For those of you venturing out on this wonderful day (weather not withstanding – how in the world did we go from 80 degrees to sleet and snow inside 40 hours?) I hope you enjoy every minute of it and be safe!
I did (most of) my celebration yesterday – it was the Emerald Isle Parade and Pub Crawl in downtown Lee’s Summit and it was an awesome day.
It started at 7:30am with the Strip Run – a 5k run and clothes drive. I’ve never run a race like that before but figured it was time to start. I ran it in 31:04 which was a little slower than I was hoping to run it in (30:00 was my target) but not as bad as it could have been. And, I realized belatedly, it was an average speed that was faster than the speed I could barely run a mile in a month ago. So we’ll call it good.
After that it was nap time. Between not sleeping the night before (which I realized probably had to do with the sugar and caffeine in the 5 Cokes I drank late at night watching the MU & K-State games) and completely exhausting myself running the 5k I managed to grab a good, solid, head-hits-the-pillow-and-you’re-out nap for a couple of hours.
I got back to Lee’s Summit about 11:30 or so (have I mentioned how much I miss living a mile away from downtown LS?) and decided I needed to grab something to eat. My first plan was Stuey McBrew’s off Third & Main because, well, they have the best food around. But I ended up walking by the Neighborhood Cafe and decided I’d drop in there instead and get some breakfast instead – it had been a long time since I’d been there. The parade started while I was enjoying my cinnamon roll (the best in the city) – and it was a long one. A really, really long one. So I decided to walk around and enjoy the sun that was sneaking out (plus my calves were incredibly tight from the run – needed to keep them stretched).
Lo and behold while I was hanging out near coffee shop I ran into a buddy of mine from volleyball and chatted with him for a while. When the parade ended around 1 it was time to open a beer, and Mingle was nearby so that was the destination. A great bar (I’d never been in there before – but will definitely be there again) and I ran into a couple of other friends there. After the beer it was a trip down to Stuey’s where I ran into another friend of mine and her friend so we grabbed a couple of green beers and talked for a while – and I ran into a couple that I hadn’t seen in easily 15 years. Then another friend of mine made it up and we all headed back to Mingle…where I swear half the bar was filled with people I know from volleyball (and one leprechaun who was driving a cooler. Don’t ask – he might have been drunk). So we caught up for a bit and then headed to the American Garage and then ended up back at Stuey’s.
After that it was almost time for the Big 12 Championship game: KU vs. K-State. Rather than mess with the crowds a friend of mine and I decided 810 Zone was a better place to enjoy the festivities so we headed there for some corned beef & cabbage and a quieter atmosphere. And a great game – mostly because KU won handily.
We finished off the night at Stuey’s and the American Garage before the night was over. It was an absolute blast. Lee’s Summit knows how to throw a party, and I had a great time seeing so many friends up there. Definitely planning on returning next year.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!by
