I’m getting there.
A few short months ago I was barely able to finish a 5k, even walking half the way. A few weeks ago I ran that same 3.1 miles at a 10-minute mile pace and was damn happy about it. Then last week I tweaked my Achilles and was out of commission for a week – down from running three days a week to none.
So my expectations for today, especially after two hours of 3-person sand volleyball last night, were pretty low. So imagine my surprise when I ran the first mile of my evening run in 8 minutes, 18 seconds and 2 miles at a 9:20 pace.
The best part, aside from my new personal record for a mile, is that I cut it off at 2-minutes not because of my cardio but because my lower back was hurting. That probably doesn’t sound like a positive, but if I could have kept that at bay I have no doubt I would have been able to run better than a 29-minute 5k.
I have a 5k this weekend and I’ll be curious to see how I do. I have a personal goal of 29:00; if the course is relatively flat I’m betting I can beat that – which will put me well on my way to my 24:00 5k in September.by
